QUICK REFERENCE:
This reference
contains detailed information about the PCTCP.INI file, the
configuration file for OnNet(R)16 for Windows and PC/TCP(R)
Network Software for DOS. This reference lists and describes
the configuration file sections and the specific parameters
in each section. The parameters affect the kernel, InterDrive,
DOS commands, and some Windows applications.
Note: This reference documents
the parameters used in two products: OnNet16 and PC/TCP. The
two products differ in the applications provided and in the
kernel. OnNet16 contains mostly Windows applications and provides
a VxD kernel. PC/TCP provides mostly DOS commands and a TSR
kernel. As a result, some sections and parameters might not
apply to one or the other product.
This reference contains four main parts:
- A "Command Cross-reference."
This section provides a list of DOS commands with hyperlinks
to the sections of the PCTCP.INI file associated with each
command. The link to this section is abbreviated to DOS
command links.
- A "Windows Applications Cross-reference."
This section provides a list of Windows applications with
hyperlinks to the sections of the PCTCP.INI file associated
with each application. The link to this section is abbreviated
to Windows
apps links.
- A "List of Configuration File
Sections." This is an alphabetical list of the sections
that can be contained in the PCTCP.INI file.The link to
this section is abbreviated to Config
sections links
- .A "Parameter Descriptions"
section. This text describes the parameters that can be
used in each of the sections of the PCTCP.INI file. The
links in the three lists are to locations in this text.
At the end of the description of each PCTCP.INI file section,
you will find a set of links to bring you back to the lists
at the front of the reference, as illustrated on the following
line:

List of Configuration File Sections
The PCTCP.INI file can contain the following
sections:
Parameter Descriptions
The remainder of this document lists the
configuration parameter sections used in the PCTCP.INI file.
These parameter sections are listed alphabetically, as are
individual parameters within each section. Default values
(if any) for parameter options are listed first. For example,
in parameter=[off|on], the default is off. The default value
(if any) is also indicated at the end of the parameter description.
For example, Default: off
[PCTCP ADDRESSES]
This section contains the IP addresses
of network servers.
cookie-server=hostname|ip_address
Specifies the fully qualified domain name
or IP address of a "quote-of-the-day" server,
used by the cookie command.
domain-name-server=ip_address
Specifies the IP address of a domain name
server, which maps IP addresses to hostnames. You can define
up to three domain name servers.
imagen-print-server=hostname|ip_address
Specifies the fully qualified domain name
or IP address of any IMAGEN print server attached directly
to the network. If you set this value, you can use the iprint
command without specifying a server on the command line.
impress-server=hostname|ip_address
Specifies the fully qualified domain name
or IP address of any ImPRESS server attached directly to
the network.
log-server=hostname|ip_address
Specifies the fully qualified domain name or IP address
of the log server. This parameter is included in case you
want to use an application that can write error or login
information to a file on your server.
lpr-server=[hostname|ip_address]
Specifies a default remote print server for
lpr, lpq, and lprm. If you do not specify
a server, you have to specify this value on the command
line when you print a file. Note that this is the hostname
(or Internet address) of the computer that is running the
print server, not the name of the printer that you want
to use.
mail-relay=[hostname|ip_address]
Specifies the fully qualified domain name
or IP address of the host that acts as an electronic mail
relay within your local network, queuing mail for hosts
that cannot be reached immediately.
nicname-server=ip_address
Specifies the Internet address for sending
inquiries using the nicname command. If multiple
nicname-server= parameters appear, nicname sends
a request to each address in the order listed until a valid
response is received.
nis-server=NIS_name_server
Specifies the IP addresses of up to three
NIS (Network Information System) servers, which map IP addresses
to hostnames. If you do not specify a server, NIS requests
will be broadcast.
time-server=[hostname | ip_address]
Specifies the fully qualified domain name
or IP address of a host acting as the time server in your
local network. This parameter is used by the setclock program.
You can define as many as five time servers. Each server
is tried in the order specified until a valid response is
received.

[PCTCP
ANSI]
This section contains a parameter that applies
to ANSI terminal emulation.
ibmpc-terminal-id=identifier
Specifies an alternative IBM PC identifier
for tn to use when synchronizing with the remote host for
a terminal type. If the terminal information database on
the remote host does not contain RFC-standard identifiers,
use this parameter to specify an identifier that does exist
in the remote host's database. If you are unsure how to
get this information, ask the administrator of the remote
system.

[PCTCP
BOOTP]
This section contains parameters that apply
to the DHCP VxD client in Windows and to the dhcp and
bootp commands for DOS.
boot-file=filename
Bootp
only. Specifies the name of a file that resides on the server
that you can use to configure diskless workstations. Bootp
can return the full path of a boot image file. If more than
one boot image file exists on a server, this parameter can
be used to specify the name of the file to use.
The server returns the name of a file
for this parameter, but does not return the file itself.
You can use a file transfer program, such as tftp, to transfer
the file to the PC. Note that the Bootp protocol does not
define the contents of the file.
The bootp command is not used
to boot the PC, so this parameter is seldom used; it is
provided only to comply with the requirements of the Bootp
protocol.
class-id=string
DHCP only. Specifies a string that identifies
the class to which the client belongs. A system administrator
can choose to group sets of PCs into separate classes, and
return different configuration information for each different
class.
An example of a class would be all PCs,
or all machines belonging to a given department.
client-id=string
DHCP only. Specifies a string that uniquely
identifies the PC, such as a username.
This value can be used in place of the
MAC address to identify a client configuration so that the
same configuration is issued to a client regardless of the
MAC address. (This supports the changing of the hardware
without reconfiguring the server or assigning the PC client
a different IP address.)
By default, the DHCP client uses a client
ID based on the MAC address.
lease-time=seconds
DHCP only. Sets the length of the lease requested
by the client in seconds. Note that it is the responsibility
of the DHCP server to determine the lease duration; a DHCP
server might offer a lease time other than that requested
by the client, depending on how the server is configured.
retries=number
Sets the number of attempts to get a response
from the server.
server-address=ip_address
Bootp
only. Specifies the IP address of the server to which the
Bootp client sends its request if the PC's IP address is
configured. If the PC's IP address is not configured, the
Bootp client broadcasts the request to the network.
server-name=server_name
Bootp
only. Specifies the server name (sname) field of the Bootp
request to the specified name. Note that the Bootp client
still either broadcasts the request, or sends the request
to the server specified by the server-address= parameter
or the -d command line option. This parameter is
provided to support those Bootp servers that allow only
the server named in the Bootp client request to respond;
many Bootp servers do not implement this aspect of the Bootp
protocol.
time-out= seconds
Sets the maximum amount of time (in seconds)
to wait for a response from a DHCP or Bootp server.
[PCTCP
COMSCRPT connection]
This section contains parameters that
apply to comscrpt (the DOS modem dialing command) and to Dialer
(the Windows dialer application).
Note that comscrpt inserts many of these
parameter values into PPPDRV, SLPDRV, PPP16550, and SLP16550.
See also the [pctcp dial] and [pctcp dial
connections] sections and the appropriate [pctcp serial connection]
section of this reference manual.
automatic-connection=(YES|NO)
Used to reconnect an idle dialup session.
If set to YES, dials the last connection whenever the serial
VxD kernel receives a send request.
connection-type=(CT_MODEM|CT_SWCELL|CT_ISDN|CT_CDPD)
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the connection type, which can be one of the following:
Default: CT_MODEM
dialer-status-on-script-complete=Dialer-[runs|exits|minimizes]-on-
script-complete
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
whether Dialer continues to run, exits, or minimizes after
a successful connection.
Default: Dialer-runs-on-script-complete
dialing-method=(TouchTone|Pulse)
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the telephone dialing method. The default is TouchTone for
push button telephones. Specify Pulse if you have a rotary
telephone. Some phones let you set the dialing method. This
parameter setting must correspond to the setting on your
phone.
dialup=drive:\path\filename
Specifies the drive, path, and name of a file
containing dial-up script commands. For more information,
see the keyword= parameter in this section.
dns1=ip_address
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the IP address of a DNS server to use for resolving domain
names.
dns2=ip_address
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the IP address of an alternate DNS server to use for resolving
domain names.
Default: 0.0.0.0
dns3=ip_address
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the IP address of an alternate DNS server to use for resolving
domain names.
Default: 0.0.0.0
hangup=drive:\path\filename
Specifies the drive, path, and name of a file
containing hang-up script commands. For more information,
see the keyword= parameter in this section.
inactivity-timeout=nnn
Used to disconnect an idle dialup session.
Sets the number of seconds to wait after the last network
activity before disconnecting the dialup connection. If
this parameter and warning-timeout= are not set to 0, the
user receives a message warning of the impending disconnection.
keyword=drive:\path\filename
Specifies the drive, path, and name of an
alternate or new script file. When you create a script file,
you should choose a name that is descriptive of the script
function. The keywords dialup and hangup identify
the default dialup and hangup scripts. You can specify these
keywords as options to the comscrpt command.
login-password=password
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the password for your account on the remote host.
login-username=name
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
your user name for logging in to a remote host.

Sets the maximum number of Van Jacobsen
compression slots allowed.
Default: 16
modem=value
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the modem type (in MODEM.INI).
phone-number=number
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the phone number to dial for this network connection.
serial=connection
Specifies the PCTCP.INI file section that
describes a particular serial connection. For example, if
you set connection to PPP_from_home, comscrpt uses
the section [pctcp serial PPP_from_home] to configure the
serial port.
serial-protocol=(SLIP|PPP)
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
the serial protocol to use. To communicate with the network
using the Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP), specify
SLIP. To communicate with the network using the Point-to-Point
Protocol (PPP), specify PPP.
StarDataEnable=(n/a|yes|no|GSM)
Windows Dialer application only. Yes
or no specifies whether or not Dialer is star data enabled
for a cellular connection. Specify n/a for all other connection
types. StarDataEnable=yes means the connection goes through
the star data modem protocol, and the phone number must
have a *3282 prefix. StarDataEnable=no means the call is
voice or point-to-point. Use StarDataEnable=GSM for European
cellular connections.
Default: n/a
swint=number
DOS comscrpt command only. Sets
the software interrupt.
Range: 0x20 0xFF
timeout=value
Windows Dialer application only. Sets the
number of seconds a connection can be inactive before terminating
the connection.
vj-compression=(on|off|auto)
Specifies if your local host sends compressed
packet headers to remote sites. Set vj-compression=auto
to instruct the remote host to dynamically determine when
to use VJ header compression.
Note: This parameter overrides
the vj-compression= parameter in the [pctcp interface
n] section.
vj-compress-slot=(0|1)
Specifies if the VJ slot number is compressed.
FTP recommends that, in general, you should not set vj-compress-slot=1.
Note:This parameter overrides
the vj-slot-id= parameter in the [pctcp interface n]
section.
Default: 0
warning-timeout=nnn
Used to disconnect an idle dialup session.
Sets the number of seconds, after a warning message, in
which to disconnect the dialup connection. If this parameter
and inactivity-timeout= are not set to 0, the user receives
a message warning of the impending disconnection.
For PPP serial configurations only:
The following parameters apply only to
PPP configurations. Most of the time, you do not need to change
them. For more information about these parameters, refer to
RFC 1331.
Note: Do not confuse PPP link level
authentication with that required at a higher level, such
as the login and password prompts required by a UNIX system.
accm=value
Sets the ACCM (asynchronous control
character map) to specify control character values to screen
out of the data stream while your local host is receiving
and transmitting data.
If your telecommunications equipment
attaches a special meaning to a control character value,
set the corresponding bit in the map to screen out this
hexadecimal character value. Specify value as either a hexadecimal
or decimal number. which is then converted to a number in
a 32-bit map. Each bit in the 32-bit map corresponds to
a control character.
Default: 0x000A0000
addr-ctrl-field-comp=[on|off]
DOS comscrpt command only. Specifies
if address and control field compression is enabled or disabled.
If set to on, the addr-ctrl-field-comp=
parameter omits the PPP packet's address and control fields
(each comprising 1 byte). Set address control field compression
on to conserve bandwidth and improve throughput. Note that
either the local or remote host can have the other enable
address control field compression. Normally, you do not
need to change this value, except to test your PPP connection.
Default: on
identity=name
Specifies the name that the remote PPP host
requires during link-layer PAP/CHAP user authentication.
This parameter is not necessary unless the remote host requires
authentication. Some remote hosts use this name as a keyword
to determine which local IP address to assign from a pool.
local-ip-address=ip_address
Specifies the local IP address used
while the two hosts synchronize addresses.
Note: If you are using PPP, and
if the remote host negotiates IP addresses, FTP recommends
that you use the default wildcard address of 0.0.0.0. Otherwise
(for example, if you are using SLIP or if the remote PPP
host does not negotiate IP addresses), you must specify
a valid local IP address.
Default: 0.0.0.0
max-config=value
Sets the maximum number of configuration
requests that PPP sends before terminating the connection.
Default: 10
max-fail=value
Sets the maximum number of timeouts
before PPP terminates the connection.
Default: 10
max-term=value
Sets the maximum number of termination
requests that PPP sends before terminating the link.
Default: 2
>mru=value
Sets the Maximum Receive Unit (MRU),
which indicates the maximum packet length that the local
host (your PC) can accept. Your PC will discard frames that
exceed this length.
Default: 1500
password=name
Specifies the password that the remote PPP
host requires during PAP/CHAP authentication. This parameter
is not necessary unless the PPP host requires user authentication.
prot-field-comp=[on|off]
DOS comscrpt command only. Specifies
if the PPP driver compresses the protocol field of each
frame that it sends.
If set to on, the protocol field in
the PPP frame header is compressed from 2 bytes to 1 byte.
If set to off, the protocol field is not compressed. You
do not normally need to change this value from the default,
except to test your PPP connection.
Default: on
remote-ip-address=ip_address
DOS comscrpt command only. Specifies
the remote IP address used while the two hosts synchronize
addresses.
Note: FTP recommends that you
use the default wildcard address of 0.0.0.0. If you specify
a nonzero IP address, make sure that it matches the IP address
specified on the PPP server. If you specify a nonzero remote
IP address, make sure that it matches the local IP address
specified on the PPP server. Otherwise, IPCP negotiation
is likely to fail.
restart-timer=value
Sets the timeout, in seconds, before
PPP resends a configuration request packet because of timeout.
Default: 3
server-prompt=[1|0]
Windows Dialer application only. Specifies
if the network service prompts for user authentication and
validation information. Enter 1 to indicate yes, and 0 to
indicate no, respectively.
Default: 1
[PCTCP

Default: yes
protocol-accepted=dhcp|bootp
Configures the DHCP client to accept only
DHCP or only Bootp server responses and reject the other.
If set to dhcp, the DHCP client ignores responses from Bootp
servers.
Default: Accept either DHCP or Bootp responses.
[PCTCP DIAL]
This section identifies parameters that
apply to the Windows Dialer application.
Note: The Dialer application uses
this section to save status information about your last connection.

defaults and reuse them for other sessions that do not have
firewall attributes associated with them.
access-mode=[USER after login|SITE
after login|USER no login]
Specifies a style for connecting to
a firewall host.
- USER after login
- Uses the USER command to send
the remote hostname and username (on the remote host)
to the proxy firewall. The system prompts you to enter
the firewall username and firewall password. This is the
default FTP setting.
- SITE after login
- Uses the SITE command to send
the remote hostname to the proxy firewall. The system
prompts you to enter the firewall username and firewall
password.
- USER no login
- Uses the USER command to send
the remote hostname and username (on the remote host)
to the proxy firewall. The firewall username and firewall
password are not required.
host=firewall_hostname

the proxy firewall on the firewall host.
Default: 21
use-PASV=[0|1]
Specifies whether to disable or enable
the PASV (passive) mode of communication when the FTP client
(your PC) connects to the remote host. Passive mode reverses
the direction of the connection establishment, so that the
remote host (rather than your PC) selects the connection
port and then notifies your PC which port to use to connect
to the remote host.
Default: 0 (off)
username=username
Specifies a valid username that has permission
to transmit data through a proxy firewall to a remote host.
The proxy firewall is software on the firewall host that
acts on behalf of FTP clients, such as your local PC.

This is the second part of the machine's fully qualified
domain name.
etc-dir=drive:\path
Specifies the directory where the SERVICES
file, used by Windows Sockets applications, and other general
system information files are stored. By default, the SERVICES
file is installed in the \ETC directory created under the
destination directory you specify during installation (the
default is drive:\PCTCP\ETC).
If the pfile= parameter is not set,
FTP Server searches for the password filename in this directory.
full-name=your_fullname
Specifies your full name. Separate each part
of your name by spaces. This name appears in the headers
of each electronic mail message that you send using the
electronic mail programs.
host-name=hostname
Specifies the hostname of your machine.
A hostname is the first part in the machine's fully qualified
domain name. Consult your system administrator to make certain
that the hostname is unique in your network's domain.
You can use any combination of letters,
numbers, or dashes in this name, with these exceptions:
do not use a period, an underscore, or a blank space.
name-resolution=[dns|nis]
Specifies either DNS (Domain Name System)
or NIS (Network Information System) name resolution. Select
NIS only if you are in a Sun network environment that uses
NIS servers to resolve hostnames to IP addresses.
nis-domain=NIS_domain
Specifies the NIS (Network Information System)
domain.
nis-timout=value
Sets the number of seconds to spend
attempting to contact an NIS server before trying another
configured NIS server.
Default: 8
office=office_name
Specifies the name of your office. OnNet16
and PC/TCP applications do not use this parameter currently.
It is included only for your personal records.
office-phone=phone
Specifies your office telephone number. OnNet16
and PC/TCP applications currently do not use this parameter.
It is included only for your personal records.
pfile=drive:\path\filename
Specifies the name and location of the password
file used by the ftpsrv and passwd programs, as well as
the FTP server embedded in the tn and rloginvt
commands. This setting overrides the etc-dir= parameter
for the purpose of locating the passwd file.
time-zone=time_zone
Specifies the abbreviated name of your
time zone. Specify est for Eastern Standard Time, cst for
Central Standard Time, mst for Mountain Standard Time, or
pst for Pacific Standard Time. For information about other
time zones, ask your system administrator.
Default: est
time-zone-offset=minutes
Sets the offset, in minutes, from Universal
Time Coordinated (UTC) -formerly Greenwich Mean Time. The
local time is calculated using this offset value. The following
offsets apply to United States users: Hawaii, 600; Pacific
Standard Time, 480; Mountain Standard Time, 420; Central
Standard Time, 360; Eastern Standard Time, 300. For information
about other time zone offsets, ask your system administrator.
Default: 300
user=username
Specifies a short form of the user's name,
for use as a default with certain commands and applications,
such as the FTP, remote shell, and remote copy commands
and applications; and the nntp, pcmail, pop2,
pop3, and rlogin commands. The user= parameter
is typically a login name on a remote host.

IDPRINT print_session]
This section defines characteristics for a specific
NFS print connection, also known as a print session. This
information is used by the FTP Network Driver in Windows,
and, in some cases, by the Idnet menu interface and the idprint
command in DOS.
banner=username
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
the username that will appear on the banner page of the
printed file. If you specified nobody for the user= parameter,
use this parameter to specify your name.
comment=comment
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
an optional comment to send with the print job. This parameter
is used for debugging and is available only with PCNFSD
version 2.
device=port
Specifies the local printer port (LPT1, LPT2,
LPT3, COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4) whose output you are redirecting
to the network printer.
file=filename
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
the name of the print spool file on the print server.
host=[hostname|ip_address]
Specifies the hostname or IP address of the
NFS server that controls the network printer that you want
to mount.
jobid=job_id
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
the job identification number for a print file. This parameter
is supported by PCNFSD version 2 only.
mine=[no|yes]
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
if you want to display only the owner's jobs in the print
queue. If you specify no, you see all jobs in the print
queue. This parameter is supported by PCNFSD version 2 only.
Default: no
number=number
Sets the number of copies to print.
This parameter is supported by PCNFSD version 2 only.
Default: 1
options=command(s)
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
printer-specific commands to send to the printer.
printer=name
Specifies the name of the network printer
that you want to mount.
qpos=position
DOS idprint command only. Specifies
the position of the print job in the print queue. This parameter
is supported by PCNFSD version 2 only.
timer=seconds
Sets a timeout period after which InterDrive
sends a file to the printer. Ensure that this value allows
enough time for an application to format your file for printing.
This applies only to DOS applications.
Default: 30
user=username
Specifies your username for authentication
purposes on the NFS server. To log in without authentication,
specify a username of nobody. The remote host does not prompt
you for a password and gives you the permissions of an anonymous
guest. If you specify ?, InterDrive prompts you for a username.
If you specify *, InterDrive sets your username to the default.
This parameter is optional.
If you omit a username or leave it blank,
InterDrive derives the default username from the first value
it finds of the following:
- A username that you set with the
idnet command or by logging in with the FTP Software
Network Driver
- A user= parameter in the [pctcp idrive]
section
- A user= parameter in the [pctcp general]
section
If no value is specified with any of
these methods, InterDrive sets the username to nobody.
when=print_conditions
Specifies one or more conditions to
signal that you want to send a file to print. Separate multiple
condition keywords with commas or spaces. This applies only
to DOS applications. The following are valid print_conditions
keywords:
- timeout - Print when the specified
period has elapsed since the last character arrived at
the redirected printer port. Use the timer= parameter
to change the default value.
- hotkey - Print when you press Ctrl+RightShift+LeftShift.
- eof - Print when you close the file.
- exit - Print when you exit from the
DOS application from which you chose to print the file.
Default: timeout

[PCTCP
IDRIVE]
This section contains global InterDrive
parameters that apply to all interactions with an NFS server
system. When you change a parameter, you must restart InterDrive
for the change to take effect. You can override many of the
settings in this section with file-system-specific parameters
in [pctcp idrive filesys] sections.
Note: If InterDrive is running
with an expanded memory manager, it does not use the values
of certain entries and sets them to the maximum. Where applicable,
these values are indicated with an EMM label beside the default
value listed for the parameter. Also, if you are using the
InterDrive VxD instead of the TSR, the VxD overrides certain
parameters in this section with parameters by the same name
in the [pctcp idrive-vxd] section. For your reference, this
section indicates parameters that have different VxD values
by listing their default VxD values here.
authentication=type[/r]
Specifies the type of authentication
to use to log in to the NFS file server. To mount file systems
as read-only, append /r to the authentication type.
Keywords: pcnfs and pcnfs/r
Default: pcnfs
autologin=[yes|no]
Specifies whether to use a default username
and password for all network connections during an InterDrive
session. If set to yes, InterDrive prompts you once for
a username and password and uses the information for all
subsequent network connections, unless you change the information.
This parameter applies to network connections in Windows
with the FTP Network Driver, and in DOS with the Idnet menu
interface.
Default: yes
autotune=[yes|no]
Specifies whether InterDrive should
dynamically adjust read size, write size, and stream values
based on network conditions. If autotuning is off and read-size=,
write-size=, and stream= parameters are specified, InterDrive
uses the specified values. If autotuning is on, InterDrive
uses the specified value an an upper limit, but might adjust
them based on the number of successful attempts to get and
send data.
Default: yes
cache-timeout=seconds
Sets the number of seconds that InterDrive
stores information about files and directory names in the
lookup cache before obtaining fresh information from the
server. Setting this parameter to 0 causes InterDrive to
cache file information indefinitely. If you load the InterDrive
TSR with the -k 0 option, this parameter is disabled. You
also can use the idconfig -l command to override
this value for an existing InterDrive session. The maximum
value is 300.
Range: 0- 300
Default: 15
cd-rom=[no|yes]
Specifies if the InterDrive client treats
file systems that you connect to as CD-ROM drives. Setting
this parameter to yes prevents InterDrive from mapping all
of the names on a CD-ROM drive. This parameter is not usually
applicable globally; you can set it for a specific file
system in a [pctcp idrive filesys] section.
Default: no
confirm=[no|yes]
Specifies whether the Idnet menu interface
prompts for confirmation before completing certain actions.
Default: no
debug=[no|yes]
Specifies whether the Idnet menu interface
displays detailed messages for debugging purposes.
Default: no
