  32. Tips

1. What is TN3270 usage purpose?
TN3270 allows a Chameleon PC to access an IBM host. That host has to be running an appropriate implementation of or workstation users, to gain access to a host system and to display data on their screens. It is a remote terminal service. Your PC cannot be a Mainframe. We provide a Telnet 3270 client only.

2. Who uses TN3270?
People who need a terminal emulation for IBM mainframe based application.

3. Which default port is used for a TN3270 connection?
Port 23 is the well known port for a Telnet connection to IBM Mainframe, using TN3270 emulation. The Mainframe Telnet server may listen on a different port such as: 1001, for example. In this case, port 1001 is to be defined in the Connection port option.

4. What is a ‘Model’ type?
The model type relates to the dimensions of the terminal screen. For example: 2 - Model 2 (24x80) -> the default terminal size is 24 lines and 80 columns.

5. What is IBM ‘IND$’ Protocol?
The IND$ program is designed with ease-of-use and efficiency in mind, all file transfer services are presented in a set of easy-to-use panels that let users point and click to set file transfer parameters and options. When special settings are required to set the type of file transfer or unique data formatting requirements, 3270Vision not only allows users to quickly set these parameters but also to build a library of file transfer templates for later use. Utilizing these templates, execution of complex transfers is as easy as point and click.

6. What does ‘EBCDIC’ mean?
EBCDIC is the IBM character storage format. Meaning that when connecting to an IBM Mainframe from your PC station, TN3270 uses a conversion table allowing to translate Windows/DOS based characters sets (ANSI/ASCII) to EBCDIC format, and vice versa.

7. What are IBM Mainframe operating systems?
MVS, CMS,VM and TSO.

8. What is a PU?
Control Unit - usually refers to the unit interpreting between the Terminal and the CPU. The Physical Unit (PU) is responsible for the operation of the physical data links attached to a node.

9. What is an LU?
Logical Unit - usually refers to the terminal itself.

10. NW4SAA: What is a ‘Server Name’?
Name of the Netware for SAA server you are trying to connect to. If you are using TCP/IP protocol as a transport, you may enter the IP address of the server or its TCP/IP name.

11. NW4SAA: What is a ‘Service Name’?
Profile Name of the NetWare for SAA server, allowing you to connect specific host. If not defined, you will be prompted to a window listing all profiles (to all hosts).

12. What is a Connection Profile?
The connection profile is created through the "connection profile" dialog and contains as many connection profiles as you need. The connection profile lets the user to automatically connect to a pre-defined Host with specific connection information. All the connection profiles are stored in the TN3270 configuration file: TN3270.CFG.

13. What is SAP?
Service Access Point: You need to consult the System Administrator for the appropriate number.

14. How many ‘Model’ types are available in TN3270?

  • 2 - Model 2 (24x80)
  • 3 - Model 3 (32x80)
  • 4 - Model 4 (43x80)
  • 5 - Model 5 (27x132)

15. What are ‘Copy and Paste’ options for?
The Copy and Past option are mainly used for copying and pasting information to spreadsheets. In versions prior to 4.5, copying in block mode was possible, but pasting was in line mode by default. In order to paste in block mode prior to 4.5 (i.e. in a single column of fields) you needed at least TN3270 4.01.1, and you must manually enter the following into the [Terminal] section of your TN3270.CFG file: Paste=Rectangle

16. How can I transfer files from my PC to my IBM Mainframe, and vice versa?
There is a File Transfer Setup dialog box under the Settings menu. This box lets you specify the file transfer program (almost always IND$FILE) located on your host. You may also specify the location of a Translation table (from EBCDIC to ASCII). If the user has a translation table, it will be on their local drive. You must also specify the correct host Operating system before starting the transfer.

17. What LU types are available within TN3270?

  • Any: Allows you to get the first available display session.
  • Public: Allows you to get any type of available LU, within the Public Pool of LUs.
  • Pooled: You need to have special rights (according to your host configuration) in order to get any available LU within a specific POOL. Therefore you need to define the POOL Name.
  • Dedicated: Available LUs for dedicated users. Usually used when the user knows the LU name.

18. Can I change the Title name of the TN3270 Window?
Yes. Use the option Connect -> More -> Title, deselect the ‘Use Default’ option, and write down the desired new Title.

19. Can I reconnect automatically to the host when the session is disconnected?
Yes. Select the option Connect -> More -> Autoreconnect. Autoreconnect will reconnect you to your host's login screen immediately upon disconnection.

20. How do I connect to a TN3270E server?
You need to use the TN3270 Connection type, select the More button, and select the option "Use TN3270E Protocol’. It is recommended to define the Device Name if you already know it. If no Device Name is defined, you will be prompted to any first available session (be careful: you may get a printer session instead of a display session).
