- What
is an AS/400?
Application System/400. An IBM minicomputer series introduced
in 1988 that primarily runs business applications.
- What is twinax cable?
Twinax cables are used for AS/400 connectivity. Twinax cable
has long been recommended by IBM as preferred method of wiring
workstations and printers to the host. Twinax is double shielded.
- What is a real AS/400
terminal?
A terminal display which is connected to the AS/400 by a twinax
connection.
- What is a device
in AS/400?
Any peripheral hardware which is connected to the AS/400.
For example: display, printer, and tape.
- What is EBCDIC?
Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code. A character
set used primarily by IBM mainframe computers. When transferring
data to or from IBM systems you will often encounter data that
is in EBCDIC format.
- What is a terminal
emulator?
An application that emulates the functionality of a particular
real terminal. For example, TN5250 is an application that provides
emulation of a real IBM 5250 terminal in software.
- What is SNA?
System Network Architecture. A proprietary networking protocol
developed by IBM to allow numerous IBM terminals and printers
to be networked to IBM mainframe computers.
- What is APPC?
Advanced Program to Program Communications. An advanced part
of IBMs SNA protocol used to provide communications for
AS/400 environments, as well as any other general program-to-program
communications over SNA.
- What is the NEWT font
used in NetManage emulation software?
The NEWT font is a true type font. It is scalable, so you
can choose the exact font size you need. It is the default font
and recommended to be used because it supports extended ASCII
characters and graphic characters.
- What is a character
set?
A character set is a country-specific or language-specific
group of characters that are translated from the Code Page table
and displayed by the screen or printer.
- What is a connection
profile?
A connection profile is associated with a particular host
and connection option. In NetManage emulation software, it allows
you to set and store necessary connection information, so that
you can reconnect without repeating the input of the connection
details.
- What is a script?
A script is a series of commands that automate one or more
procedures that can be done with the terminal emulation application.
Scripts can be created to automate TN5250 terminal connections
and actions done during a session with an AS/400.
- What is the Session
Manager application?
Session Manager is an application that allows you to manage
multiple terminal emulation and printer emulation sessions from
within a single program.
Go to File/Manager
- What is the difference
between the connection types in 5250 Terminal?
The TN5250 connection type is via TCP/IP protocol. All other connection
types are made in conjunction with the NetSoft router client software.
The supported connection types include; Twinax, Microsoft SNA
Server, Novell SAA Gateway, and 802.2 connections.
- Is it possible to
have a printer session via the TN5250 protocol?
The TN5250 protocol standard doesn't include a definition
to provide the capability to send printer data streams in the
TN5250 traffic. This is a limitation of the protocol standard
for TN5250 and not a limitation of the TN5250 emulation software.
Therefore, printing during a TN5250 session must be done by other
means like LPR.

- How is it possible
to emulate a printer session through 5250 Terminal?
It is possible to print with PR5250 application through APPC
connection (Chameleon Hostlink) supported only.
- How can I connect
to a specific device?
Go to Connect/ More and write the Device name to which you
want to connect to.
- What is the default
port number for TN5250 connections?
Port number 23. But the server can listen to higher ports
as well.
- How can I give
a title to a terminal session?
Go to Connect/ More and specify a title name. By default,
the host name appears in the title bar.
- How is it possible to
unlock the keyboard if you cant continue typing?
Press the RESET key or enable the Auto-Reset option in the
Settings/Preferences menu.
- What should I check if
I have problems getting connected to my AS/400 over the TCP/IP
protocol using TN5250?
Be sure you have selected the proper connect port, which is
23. Verify TCP/IP connectivity to any remote system by using the
Ping application to ping the remote TCP/IP host.
- What the 5250 Terminal?
5250 terminal is NetManages terminal emulation and communications
program for connecting a PC to an IBM AS/400 host. This application
offers support for traditional 5250 connection support (twinax,
802.2 etc.), for IBM hosts, as well as TN5250 support for TCP/IP
connections. The 5250 Terminal application is included in the
Chameleon Host Link and Host Link 97 applications.
- What is the default
font for 5250 Terminal?
The default font for 5250 Terminal is the NEWT font.
- How do I change the
character conversion to a specific country on the fly?
Access the settings menu à International, then select the
Country code conversion to use. It indicates which section of
the kbdmap.cfg file to use when converting characters from the
host to the application and vice-versa.
- Are there any keys
on the PC keyboard that can not be mapped?
Yes, the <Left Shift>, <ALT> and <PRTSC >cannot
be mapped to alternate functions.
- Which screen sizes
do we support through emulation?
-Model 2: 24 lines, 80 columns (default)
-Model 5: 27 lines, 132 columns
- How many instances
of the 5250 Terminal application can be active concurrently?
The 5250 Terminal application has no specific limit on the
number of sessions. Some limitation may be imposed by the underlying
connection technology or configuration though (number of TCP/IP
sockets, DFT or CUT terminal type with twinax connections, etc.).
- What is the default
name of the configuration file of 5250 Terminal?
TN5250.cfg
- What is the role of
the TN5250.cfg file?
The current preferences and host name are saved to a configuration
file. The configuration file is loaded when the 5250 Terminal
application is started. You can have different configuration files
for each session. The next time you open a connection, the default
configuration file will be the last configuration file that you
saved.
- What product
enhancements have been made to TN5250 since v5.0?
*The Recorder has been enhanced. Now, using the Recorder, you
can choose the language for recording the script and the run mode
for playing it. Activate this feature by selecting the Script
Type... option in the Script Menu. You will see a dialog box that
lets you select one of the Recording languages.
Note: Simplified refers to a subset of NetManage Scripting
for Applications commands that provide automated login. It can
be run from Telnet, TN3270 and TN5250 Terminal Emulation applications
using a connection profile or after a connection has been made.
*Cham 4.5: Runs scripts that have been created using the Cham
4.5 or Simplified Script Type.
*Debug Mode. Choosing Debug from the Script menu starts the script
editor in debug mode, making it possible to run and debug line
by line.
- What new terminal
applications are included with v6.0?
The WinHLL Automation Server: This is an OLE automation object
that automates the standard Windows HLLAPI functions (compatible
with IBM EHLLAPI), as they relate to the TN3250 and TN5250 terminal
emulators.
